Pepsi or Water?

I was in an airport recently and I overheard a woman complaining about the price of bottled water there. It was $5.00 for 500ml, whereas a 750ml bottle of Pepsi was $0.99. She continued at great length and volume until, at last, I had to look over at her. She held the unopened bottle of water in one hand while she drank the Pepsi with the other.

I wondered why on earth she’d spend the money if she didn’t think the water was worth it. I puzzled over why, when she’d chosen to spend the money, she wasn’t drinking it. She was cheating herself twice, losing money and nutrition.

Then I thought about the writing courses I’ve paid for but haven’t yet done, and the books on writing that I’ve bought and haven’t yet studied. I’m cheating myself twice, losing money and knowledge.

Are there areas where you’re cheating yourself? What resources do you already have that you’re not availing of? If you used them, how much closer to your writing goals could you get?
