Of course, there’s really only one thing that keeps us from writing and that’s us.
The only thing we’re working against is ourselves. We call it Resistance or writer’s block or a paradigm because that makes it easier to understand. We say we’re too busy, we don’t have time, we’re too tired, we don’t have the money, we don’t get enough support and so on. But if we’re honest with ourselves, we know that isn’t true. When we have a burning desire to do something, we do it. Period.
If there’s a TV show we love, we find time to watch the next episode. If there’s a new gizmo we really want, we find the money to get it.
Writing is no different. If we really want to be professional authors we’ve got to realize that all the things that we say are keeping us from writing are merely convenient excuses. They allow us to shirk our responsibility and place blame on someone or something outside of ourselves.
Professionals know the truth and it’s simply this: I have seen the enemy, and she is me.
