It took me 8 years but I finally discovered how to...
WRITE A BREAKOUT BOOK
(Seriously. There’s a way to do it. It’s not a secret — in fact, agents and publishers want you to know!)
Sale closes on September 2nd at 7pm EST!
You missed out!
Most writers devote months, even YEARS, to revising a manuscript. They want it to be the best it can be before they query an agent.
The problem is that they don't know if they're improving their story, or merely changing it.
They could even be ruining it.
From one writer to another, trust me when I say that if you don't know, with absolute certainty, how to write a cracker of a novel, you're at serious risk of…
…flailing for years in the revision loop
…receiving stacks of rejection letters
…getting one-star reviews
…enduring little (or even zero) sales
When you do find an agent and publisher willing to take a chance on you, it also means you won't know how to incorporate the inevitable editorial changes.
That means you'll be dropped by BOTH your publisher AND your agent.
And that means you'll be seen as a liability…
…which will make it even harder for you to find another agent and publisher.
You've read books about how to write novels. You've used beat sheets. You've been in a writing group, you've used beta readers and you've taken formal writing classes. You might even have an MFA.
But these things haven't worked because either they're too simplistic, or they're too complicated, or they focus on line writing not storytelling.
Or worst of all, because the teachers don't know what they're talking about.
In 2015, as a single parent of two very young children, I hired a babysitter so I could attend a community writing class once a week. The teacher was something of a local celebrity with nine published books and I went to those lessons faithfully for months. Night after night, when my kids were asleep and my day's work was done, I sat at my kitchen table cranking out writing assignments.
By the end of the course, I was more confused than ever because, as it turns out, the teacher didn't know what he was talking about. His parting advice to me was to put the manuscript back to the way it was before I met him.
I was devastated. I was frustrated. And I was angry.
I knew there had to be a better way.
And so I started the long, laborious process of educating myself. Every single day from that to this I have studied stories and how they work.
I've invested tens of thousands of dollars, I've worked with some of the industry’s top professionals including Robert McKee, Shawn Coyne and Alec Sokolow, and I've cohosted two highly-rated podcasts on the writing craft.
I discovered that the solution is to know how stories work, and the key to that is understanding story theory.
Believe me when I say that story theory is easy to understand AND to apply.
In 2016 I self-published a novel that I wrote using one small bit of theory, and with only a modest promotion, it's still generating royalties month after month.
In today's publishing industry agents, publishers and readers all want a story that grabs their attention on the very first page, and holds it until the very last page.
I've discovered how to do that.
And my process works for every story, in every genre.
It doesn't matter if you're writing a plot-driven story or a quiet, character-driven story. It doesn't matter if you have one protagonist or many. It doesn't matter if you have one plotline or many. It works for every story. Every genre.
It even works for memoir.
And it's called the
BREAKOUT BOOK COACHING BUNDLE
I'll work directly with you in private coaching sessions where we'll discuss your specific story. I'll teach you the 3 essential skills every novelist needs to write a book that agents, publishers and readers will love.

The process outlined in The Breakout Book Coaching Bundle works for every single genre (plot-driven and character-driven), and that means you'll never be confused, or lost in a manuscript again.

Having Valerie as an editor/writing coach is INCREDIBLE!! The experience is positive and for the first time in my life, I feel like my dream can be a reality!!!! You can't put a price on that. It's priceless.

Valerie is on your side. She will meet you where you're at and, if you're willing to listen, and learn to use the tools, frameworks and heartfelt, sensitively-given advice she offers, you will grow as a writer and as a person.

I was ready to work hard when I signed up for coaching with Valerie. I was tired of trying and trying and trying. Following advice I found elsewhere, trying to learn from reading authors, searching for advice online and all over the world. I was spinning my wheels all day, every day, and getting nowhere with my progress. Valerie is both a fiction writer and an editor as well as a coach and she is brilliant. It's much more valuable than I expected. Her approach is very effective and actually works. She is a lot of fun, and at the same time - no nonsense. She is a kickass coach which is what I needed. She has an admirable work ethic and digs to find what you need and works hard to get you there. Valerie's coaching jump-started me. The sessions are fun and memorable and I will always be grateful to her.

Working with Valerie is like receiving medical care for your story - she wants to know the problems as you see them, she observes in detail, she has excellent diagnostic tools for getting to the bottom of issues, can often see problems and strengths you might be unaware of, she has very practical solutions, and you can bring any problem to her at any time. And her energy is enormous - she will lift your story up many notches if you are willing to go along for the journey.
